Philip James Elliot
Jim Elliot (1927-1956) is famous for his quote, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." Well, his original handwritten quote in his journal reads, "... to gain that which he cannot lose." Someone probably modified the text to make it sound more consistent.
But the message still retains its power and incisive conviction. Jim Elliot was my dad's hero. The story of Jim and his four friends' martyrdom at the hands of the tribal people that they were evangelising in Ecuador in 1956 inspired my dad to give his life to fulltime Christian mission work. His calling, so to speak.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the deaths of Jim Elliot, Ed McCully, Pete Fleming, Nate Saint and Roger Youderian.
"Wherever you are, be all there."
